Apart from equine events, Wellington is also popular for its prestigious and private golf course communities. The palatial Palm Beach Polo Golf and Country Club beautifully marries two favorite Florida pastimes: polo and golf. This community features eight polo fields, multiple clubhouses, a fitness center, outdoor swimming pool, and two championship golf courses, one designed by Pete Dye and the other by Ron Garl and Jerry Pate. Ranked one of the “top 100 places to live” by Money Magazine (2010), the Village of Wellington’s humble heritage began as a strawberry patch, known as the Flying Cow Ranch. Mr. Charles Oliver Wellington, whose initials (C.O.W.) represent the “cow” part of name, began to develop part of the property in the early 1970s. For many years, Wellington was considered a quiet, sleepy suburb of West Palm Beach with steady but sustainable growth. However, once the village was incorporated in 1995, the region experienced tremendous growth and became a landmark for elite equestrian events.

Today, the annual Palm Beach Winter Equestrian Festival held at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington is the world’s largest equestrian competition, attracting more than 2,500 highly-ranked domestic and international hunter/jumper riders. The festival runs from January through April and features a variety of showcases and charity events, including the popular Saturday Night Lights, a Grand Prix competition that is fun for the whole family. Many local riders from Palm Beach Riding Academy or Desert Rose Ranch in nearby Jupiter, Florida, also compete at different levels during the Winter Equestrian Festival. In addition to the festival, the International Polo Club Palm Beach is another fantastic spectator event in Wellington. The venue features professional polo matches between the world’s best teams including Audi, Dubai, White Birch, Orchard Hill, Lucchese, and Palm Beach’s home team, Valiente. A premier Palm Beach social outing, the Sunday polo matches present patrons with the opportunity to enjoy champagne brunches, grandstand camaraderie, champagne divot stomps, and post-event parties.

Though centered around horses and country clubs, Wellington has many other attractions as well. The Mall of Wellington Green is a premier indoor shopping complex anchored by Dillard’s and Nordstrom. Nearby in Loxahatchee, Lion Country Safari, a drive-through excursion with an adjoining adventure park, is an exciting and educational trip for the family. Other popular attractions in Wellington include Tiger Shark Cove, the Wellington Environmental Preserve, and Peaceful Waters Sanctuary. Located just 25 minutes from downtown West Palm Beach, residents of Wellington appreciate the close proximity to the area’s notorious beaches, saltwater fishing holes, and fine dining establishments.
